Crescent Sock Company was founded in Niota, TN in 1902 by James L. Burn and continues to operate today under the leadership of his fourth generation family.
Crescent Sock Company
Welcome to Socktown, USA
Tucked away, near the base of the Appalachian Mountains in East Tennessee is the sleepy little town of Niota. Pass through the only stop light in town, and you’ll find Crescent… home of the oldest continually operating hosiery mill in the United States.
A lot was happening in the world in 1902. The Pepsi-Cola Company opened for business, Nabisco Animal Crackers and Crayola Crayons hit the shelves for the first time, and to the delight of homeowners everywhere, the gas-powered lawn mower was invented.
Meanwhile, in Niota, TN a group of businessmen met at the local train depot to discuss how to create jobs in their community. The group, led by James L. Burn, decided to open a hosiery mill.
Inspired by the name of the Cincinnati-to-New Orleans train route that ran through the town, they named it Crescent.
Commitment to Quality
Over a century later, the fourth generation Burn family members still have the same determination to create jobs within our local community. In the world of sock knitting, where big knitting corporations turn out millions of socks a week, Crescent has found a home making high quality socks that perform better than anything else out there.
First and foremost, Crescent is a family owned and operated company. With well over a century in business we have learned that standing with our employees, their families, and our community is the key to long lasting success.
Crescent has been operating under the leadership of the Burn family for over 115 years, and that emphasis on family and community is the cornerstone of everything we do.
Not only is Crescent proud to be family owned, we are also a WBENC certified Woman Owned business!
Great Employees Make Great Products
Crescent was founded over 115 years ago to create jobs in a struggling local economy. All these years later, our employees, their families, and our community are still what makes us great.
Not only does the Mill operate under the leadership of the 4th generation of the Burn Family, but there are numerous employees who are 2nd and 3rd generation Crescent employees, some of whom have been with us for over 50 years!
Serving Our Community
Our community came together in 1966 to help us rebuild after a catastrophic fire almost wiped out our mill, and with their help, we never missed a shipment!
Today we see it as a vital part of our mission statement to give back to our community.
